My Best Friend Was a Rock Star, Now he’s Dead. After 2 decades as bass player for iconic rock band Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Howie Epstein took his role as Heartbreaker a little too far; he passed away February 23, 2003. His drug addiction would get him arrested and eventually lose him his job with the Heartbreakers. But there was far more to this man than the dash between his dates of birth and death. He will be remembered by most as an incredibly talented musician, singer and producer who succumbed to addiction. He will be remembered by many as a gentle soul, a lover of animals, a practical joker, a storyteller, a reliable friend who was there when needed – for as long as he could be. Through conversations and memories, these pages include stories Howie told and events that occurred, the author did not corroborate anything Howie said. No holds barred, no sugar-coating, the author is furious with him for being dead and makes that abundantly clear. But, you can’t stay mad at a ghost forever. Grief, redemption, acceptance and closure are but a few things achieved…mercifully.

I just finished chapter 13 and had to say how I'm loving this book! I think it's mostly the author's voice that I love so much. Her conversations are cracking me up. I just had to break away from reading for a moment to get that out!Product details

Conversations With My Dead Rock Star Best Friend Susan Daley 9781523654666 Books Reviews
I’ll admit that I’m a skeptic about life after death but I found that I was much less so after reading this book. In fact, after losing people in my life I found comfort in the idea that we can communicate with those who have passed over to the other side. Regardless of your beliefs, this is a story that will pull you in and you’ll find yourself having a hard time putting it down! Susan’s writing style is so enjoyable - I found myself laughing, crying, and empathizing with her as she converses with her dead rock star best friend to learn things not only about him, but about herself.
I highly recommend this book!
It's a brilliant piece of writing that captures the complexity of human relationships, spirituality, grieving and personal growth through candid and entertaining conversations with a best friend ' a dead rock star. The author has an uncanny ability to elicit acceptance, understanding and compassion of others - while holding them accountable for their actions- through the writing of recalled conversations with a cherished friend. I couldn't put the book down. I was hooked from the first word to the last sentence as it conjured up tears, laughter, feelings of sadness and empathy.
Whether you are a Tom Petty and Heartbreakers fan, an enthusiast of skilled writing, a proponent for personal growth and/or have an interest in communicating with the afterlife, there is something in this book for everyone. I am so thankful for having found this author and you can bet I am watching closely for her next book! 5 stars!!
I have a fascination, bordering on obsession, with Howie Epstein. As a Tom Petty fan and a musician, it seems he was truly the shooting star, who’s 20 years with the band seem to be forgotten too often and were gone in a blink. I was very frustrated with the minimal amount of information available regarding his life and death. While it is cliché for a rock star to die of a heroin overdose, questions always remain in my mind as to when and why his heroin use started, and despite reaching the top of his profession, he refused to stop even to the point of death. I cannot fully believe in conversations with the dead, but this book is truly important to me as it answers many of the questions I had, and discloses information on Howie’s private life and death, not previously reported. Thank you Ms. Daley, for a truly fascinating portrait of this very talented man who’s demons, the origin of which may probably remain elusive forever, caused him to lose all he had worked so hard for and ultimately his life. I read it straight through for over two hours and simply could not put it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone with interest in music, drug abuse, or simply the complex mechanisms of close friendship. Thanks again, Ms. Daley.
Crap!
From the heart - the ONLY way to write....was always curious about Howie, and this book satisfied that curiosity and with respect and brutal honesty !! Thank you, Susan !!
Thank you for sharing this with us. Excellent read; very difficult to put it down. I enjoyed the self-realization that went hand in hand with hindsight being 20/20. ❤
Susan Daley made me fall in love with these two characters as I got to know them through this emotional, dramatic journey of friendship, self discovery, love and loss and ultimately (hopefully!) self love!
It's a deeply emotional road yet Susan lets us take comedic pit stops along the way via her hilarious commentary on seemingly random yet profoundly connected thoughts & events.
I hope there's more coming from this author.
